Pandemic Preparedness and Response Plans

- National Plan

The National Influenza Pandemic Response Plan comprehensively addresses the threat of pandemic influenza and highlights the strategies and actions to be taken in preparedness and during the response of a potential pandemic outbreak.

Government has invested in the preparedness for this eventuality with the main objectives aimed at safe-guarding the health of the nation and reducing the socio-economic impact that such a societal calamity is expected to bring about. Critical investments were channeled, in particular, to our national Health Care Services in preparation of the national medical infrastructure [including pharmaceuticals] to meet the surge in health care demands and to other critical infrastructural areas to ensure sustainability of service delivery for the longest time possible during the Response phase.....( Read More )

- Health Sector Plan

The Health Division Influenza Pandemic Contingency Plan for the Maltese Islands serves as a guiding operating procedure on how the Health Division will respond in the scenario of a forthcoming Influenza Pandemic.

This plan has been drawn up by the Influenza Pandemic Advisory Committee which was set up by the Director General Health in February 2005. The committee represented a number of professionals from the various sectors that will be involved in the response to a future pandemic. The committee was responsible to formulate the best working procedures to be adopted during the pandemic. (Read More).

- Family Plan

In any catastrophic situation, planning and preparations in advance increases the chances of survival, both at individual but also at community levels. Although disasters in Malta are not a frequent occurrence, it is crucial to increase the community resilience to the deleterious effects associated with such events. Building the individual family’s survival skills is one of the essential elements in achieving this scope. The family disaster plan helps each member of a family respond to such calamities. This report is not exhaustive and is specifically focused on an influenza pandemic scenario. It can indeed be used for all calamities that can affect a community but other items will have to be added and the duration should be for a lesser period of time until international aid reaches our country. In the case of an influenza pandemic, this will affect the world globally and all countries will be in the same situation. Items which are stockpiled will help decrease unnecessary traveling to and from, shops and supermarkets. Quantities of items stored depend on the size of the family and the anticipated period of time to cover. It is postulated that a pandemic wave may last from one to two months but at no time is it implicated that during a pandemic everyday life would come to a standstill. (Read More).
